I hit publish on Save Splurge Deny Debt on February 14 of this year and the other night I realized that it would be six whole months since I started a blog. I then realized I should probably write up some sort of post about this small milestone.
It would serve as a way to keep me motivated to continue, as life can sometimes find a way of making it nearly impossible to blog. Thankfully I have coffee and a gorgeous supportive wife, who even submitted a guest post when I was down and out with an illness.
I started this blog to hopefully help others get a hold of their finances and learn ways to improve their budget, spend less, and splurge wisely. I also enjoy sharing my experiences with things like family, our goals, and money experiments we try along the way. Thank you to everyone who has stopped by and read the site, and also to those who have emailed and commented.
Without further ado, here are some of my first month numbers. I will also talk about what the future may hold for this little website.
After these first six months, I am surprised at the results. I admit they are nowhere near some of the other great new finance blogs out there. I am building the site as my life permits, and it will be slower than others. Things are moving in the right direction, and I am happy with the growth of the blog.
Here is a snapshot of the current statistics:
Again, nothing fancy, but I am excited about it. I have published over 60 posts, and feel like my writing ability has gotten better along the way.
Even with life getting in the way of a completely consistent schedule, I have seen growth every month in readership. I try to post 3 times a week, and hope to get more consistent with this posting schedule in the future.
My most popular post so far has been 9 Money Saving Games to Help you Save More. This post was featured on the Rockstar Finance website. It has driven the most traffic to my site and still continues to get traffic to this post every day.
I am only using two different social media platforms right now. Twitter and Pinterest allow me to spend a small amount of time on them, while getting some nice traffic to the site, along with great interaction from other like-minded people.
Twitter Followers: 888
Pinterest Followers 225
Twitter has been growing nicely. I do not follow a lot of people, and try to keep my followers to blogs I enjoy or influencers I like to read about. This platform has also brought 900 referrals to my site.
Over the last month my Pinterest page has been growing nicely. I have been added to some great group boards, which has led to an increase in traffic referrals. Over the last 30 days, Pinterest is my number two source of traffic, only behind Twitter. Some days it is now ahead of Twitter, so the viral nature of Pinterest is starting to work for me. Follow me here and see how this is growing!
Blogs I Have Found and Follow
One of the awesome things about starting my own blog is I get to interact with some awesome bloggers, and have found many new blogs to follow. I have learned so much from people (a lot) smarter than me, and I am better with my own finances because of their posts and ideas.
Here are some of the few blogs I have found that I am a fan of. I seriously could talk about 100 of these blogs, so I am limiting it to only a few. There are amazing blogs out there and so many smart people. Rockstar Finance is great at focusing on so many of these, but here are my personal favorites.
Sam is unbelievably smart and talented. You will be smarter after reading this. He comments on all things finance and life. He is a new father so I love the posts about fatherhood and planning for your children’s future.
This site is basically my go to every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday that he posts. Reading this site also got me thinking about trying out my own blog, and Sam really talks about the pros and cons of starting a blog.
Ty was one of the first blogs I found when I started SSDD. His post about being a family on one income living well sparked my interest in doing this with my family. After reading his blog, I realized that my family could accomplish this goal, and we are working towards it now. He is an awesome family man that is also a talented writer as well. I hope to be listening to his future podcast on my way to work in the mornings. (Hint Ty)
One of the newcomers that I look forward to reading every time there is a new post. Luxe is killing it in the big city of New York. She is recently married, and writes some detailed posts about all things money. She has awesome frugal tips, and a funny twitter husband in Teddy Luxband that also contributes fun articles from time to time
Ah, the bitches. Talk about a couple of badasses. Kitty and Piggy both write though provoking posts about life, money, and the workplace. I enjoy their perspective on so many different topics and challenge my own thoughts on a lot of articles. This type of writing makes me smarter as a person and as a personal finance blogger.
The Future of SSDD
First and foremost, I want to keep getting better at writing and providing great content for this site. Helping people be better with money is my ultimate goal, and I hope to grow and connect with more people across the world. I also hope to keep sharing my successes with personal finance, leading to debt free articles and early retirement articles in the future!
My first major goal is try to get ahead with blog posts. This has been one of the harder parts of blogging. Finding the time to create, write, and edit posts is wildly time consuming. Raising an awesome toddler and trying to be a good husband come first, along with my full-time job that actually pays me.
I will be starting a resources page soon, talking about awesome products that I have started using or have used to be better with budgeting and finance. There are so many new tools out there thanks to technology, and I would like to review many of these for others.
On a selfish note, I hope to slowly build up more monetization of this site. Google Adsense is fun to watch grow, but there are others way that I hope to make some money from this site. I may explore different types of second jobs online, using this site as a platform and portfolio. Some form of social media marketing for small businesses sounds like a lot of fun, as I once had my own business.
My wife also told me any money earned from this site can go towards a 30th birthday celebration in Vegas, so please click the Amazon ad on the right and purchase your normal Amazon items. I will earn a small commission that I will bet all on black.

This new hobby has been a lot of fun, and I am happy to say that six months in, I am excited to continue building this project. There have been nights where it is hard not to compare myself to some of these fast-growing new blogs. I have to remind myself that as long as I stay disciplined and keep improving, I will see the steady growth continue.
Thank you again to everyone that has stopped by the site. I really do hope people have learned something, or at least enjoy my stories and thoughts on the world. Please contact me if you have something you like me to write about. Also, if you have any questions about starting a blog, reach out and I will be more than happy to tell you about my experience and help in any way!
